Child Friendly Shore diving at Abu Dabbab, Marsa Alam, Egypt

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

We were lucky enough to spend the last week of February 2020 (Just before the Corona lock down) in the embrace of the Egyptian Red Sea. Abu Dabbab is located in #MarsaAlam, which is renowned for its sandy beaches and coral reefs. The U-shaped Abu Dabbab Bay is known for its sea turtles and dugongs (sea cows). The coral reefs make the beach suitable for snorkelers and divers of all skill levels, and is an ideal dive site for children.

Home to numerous giant green sea turtles that you can consider as swimming partners. Divers can swim close by and these terrific turtles will remain happily chomping on the beds of sea grass. Dugongs are the rarest marine herbivorous mammals (related to elephants) and are referred to as ‘sea cows’ because their diet consists mainly of sea-grass. Abu Dabbab gives you the opportunity to meet these gentle giants, although we weren't that lucky. Other colorful marine species that dominate the shore are ghost pipefish, the rare thorny seahorse, orange anthias, parrotfish, wrasse, angel and butterfly fish. In the shallow spots of the beach, you can also spot the bizarre looking but completely harmless Guitar Shark.

The shore dives are easy, with a gentle sloping entry, leading to vast beds of sea grass. No deeper than 11m, its ideal for beginners. The shore reef is still in good condition, full of marine life. There are plenty of resorts nearby so you don't have to stay right on the beach. Only a 5 hour flight away from most European countries, Marsa Alam offers a great escape from those winter blues. We did not find February to be to cold either with water temperatures of 22 Degrees Celcius, a 5mm or 7mm is ample.

We want to say a big shout out to #MonkeyDivers who were positive and patient, and very family orientated. We would highly recommend them.
